90 Mile Beach

Leaving Gary’s establishment in the rearview mirror, I ended up in the lovely town of Orbost, Victoria (which, according to Wikipedia, is very well known for being 375 kilometres east of Melbourne and 235 kilometres south of Canberra). After grabbing a coffee, I decided I had done all the town had to offer and carried on to Lakes Entrance.

Lakes Entrance is set on both an interior massive waterway, and the ocean. A beautiful, quaint town. I settled into an RV park and got miscellaneous chores done, thankful to be in a legitimate town again for the first time in a week.

Exploring the city in its entirety on day two, I discovered Wyanga vineyard, just on the western side of the town. I called up the owner who explained if you buy a 50$ gift card for their restaurant & tasting room, you are free to camp on the vineyard property, which was the easiest decision I have made. Beautiful grounds stretched for kilometers with grapes, a dock way down the interior waterway of lakes entrance, and a stunning restaurant that made shockingly good Mexican food.

If you’re curious about the wine, the white field blends from ’23 and ’24 were my favourites. Especially the ’23. Classic high acidity whites with amazing notes of stone fruit and jalapeños. The reds were decent (the Tempranillo was particularly good, but the pinot noir and the Malbec could be skipped).

After leaving what almost felt like a spa treatment at the winery, I continued town the Northeast Victoria coast to Flamingo Beach.  Yet another pristine, remote beach, sittuated centrally on the “90 mile beach” (the fourth longest continuous beach in the world) with no rocks or people as far as the eye can see. I had time for a brief drone test before biblical rains hindered my ability to enjoy the beach as much as I wanted to. One night of torrential downpour later, I made the decision to head to the big city to dry off. Next stop, Melbourne!
