After my 12 Apostles visit, I took a few days to regroup and get some shopping out done before crossing over into South Australia. The main target for the week was to add a working sink to the van – although most campsites have running water, a sink would be a huge quality of life improvement.

I played around with a variety of options, but ended up going with the set up seen above. Underneath, I have a clean water / dirty water system that gives me about 4 days worth of use before I have to refill and empty the respective tanks. A few tools and some hardware made this an easy renovation, only taking an hour to get all set up after taking a few days to brainstorm!

With my newly constructed sink, I crossed over the South Australian border and pulled into the town of Port MacDonnell. Stunning overlook parking lots had been allocated as RV overnight zones, allowing me to snag this view for 2 beautiful nights. Each morning I popped over to town for a coffee and a chat with the locals, and then spent my afternoons reading and staring out the sliding door, keeping an eye out for any whales or other wildlife that might be floating in the rough waves below.

I could have stayed here for a week taking in the view, but I got antsy to make forward progress towards Adelaide – my departing point for the holidays coming up. A short drive up the road came Mount Gambier, an area known for having the most recent volcanic activity on mainland Australia.
I was ready for an adventure after a few lovely days relaxing on the water, so I tackled 2 of the smaller dormant volcanoes in the area – Mount Schank and Mount Gambier. If those geological features weren’t enough, Mount Gambier is also home to the famous Umpherston Sinkhole, where I spent an afternoon avoiding swarms of bees that had claimed the sinkhole as their home.

10 hours of physical activity later and I was ready for a beer and a good nights sleep – both of which I found at The Bellum Hotel, where RVs can camp outside for free. I went in for a quick beer and a chat, but ended up getting sucked in a for a great chicken parm and a live jam band playing some indie / folk / rock hits.

Meg the owner gave me some incredible recommendations for the rest of my trip to Adelaide, which I hope to hit over the next week!
